Tailor's Bunion Deformity involves a condition where the fifth metatarsal spreads away from the Second third and fourth metatarsal's and becomes a prominent knuckle bone on the side of the foot. Typically the patient presents with symptoms of pain to the fifth metatarsophalangeal joint or knuckle bone with an aching type pain that intensifies with use of shoes or activity.
Conservative intervention begins with foot orthotics and modification of shoe selection to a combination type last for woman's shoes and a wider type of shoe for athletics. A combination type last for woman's shoes is where the shoe is a width wider in the forefoot then the heel by design.
The surgical correction of a tailor's bunion deformity is closely related to the surgical correction of bunion deformity about the big toe. A tailor's bunion is the enlargement of the outside of the foot just behind the little toe. Behind each toe is a long bone in the foot. These bones are called metatarsals and numbered one through five with the fifth metatarsal being behind the little toe. A tailors bunion exists when the fifth metatarsal or tissues surrounding the fifth metatarsal are prominent on the outside of the foot causing irritation in shoe gear or pain with walking.
